English Language Teaching
There are more than 2 billion English language learners around the world! This highlights the global need for qualified English teachers and the growing salaries offered to English language teachers in some of the world’s leading employment markets.
Becoming an English teacher through a globally recognized qualification such as the CELTA course can significantly increase your chances of finding excellent employment opportunities.
In this article, we will explore English teacher salaries before and after obtaining CELTA certification, highlight some of the countries that offer competitive salaries to teachers, including leading countries in the Middle East, and discuss salaries for online English teachers.
The average salary for an English as a Second Language teacher is generally around $19.50 per hour. This profession is also considered one of the most in-demand jobs in education according to Indeed. Several factors contribute to this demand, including:
- The growing number of international students in English-speaking countries.
In the United States alone, the number of international students exceeded one million in 2019.
As this number continues to increase, the demand for English as a Second Language (ESL) teachers also grows in the United States and other countries such as Canada, Australia, and the United Kingdom.
Although these students may already know how to communicate in English, they often need additional lessons to develop their language skills, improve their pronunciation, and practice English regularly with professional instructors.
As a result, there are many employment opportunities, especially for teachers who hold recognized qualifications in English language teaching, such as the globally recognized CELTA certificate.
- Non-English-speaking countries need qualified English teachers.
Many countries continuously need English language instructors to teach employees and students so they can work and communicate more effectively within international companies. These countries include Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and many others.
Teaching in countries where English is not the first language is generally referred to as teaching English as a Foreign Language (EFL).
Many teachers find that these countries offer numerous employment and career advancement opportunities. In addition, the salary of an English teacher can be highly competitive. We will discuss this in more detail below.
- Growing demand for online English teachers.
With the widespread adoption of online learning, many schools, colleges, and training centers now need qualified teachers who can teach online.
The online education market was expected to grow significantly, reaching $350 billion by 2025.
For this reason, there is strong demand for qualified English language instructors who can teach students anywhere in the world.
English Teacher Salaries Without CELTA vs. CELTA-Certified Teachers
More than 20,000 English as a Second Language teaching positions are advertised each month. This is driven by the large number of people around the world who want to learn English, increasing the need for teachers who can provide them with the language education they need.
However, teachers without a recognized qualification such as CELTA may have fewer opportunities than English teachers who hold the certification. As a result, CELTA-qualified teachers may have access to higher-level positions and potentially higher salaries.
The average salary for an ESL teacher without CELTA certification is approximately $2,000 per month and may sometimes reach $3,000.
By comparison, the average salary for an English teacher with a CELTA qualification can reach approximately $4,000 per month. In some cases, this can be nearly twice the salary of a teacher without the certification.
This means that annual salaries for professionals with this qualification may range from $40,000 to $60,000, depending on the institution or school where they work and the country in which they choose to work.
The difference in salary can be significant after obtaining CELTA certification, as teachers may qualify for better-paid positions.
But the benefits do not end there. CELTA training provides practical teaching skills that help teachers manage classrooms effectively, understand differences between learners, select appropriate teaching methods, and simplify complex information into accessible lessons.
English Teacher Salaries in the Middle East
The Middle East is considered one of the regions that offers competitive salaries to qualified English teachers. Salaries generally range from $2,500 to $6,000 per month, in addition to benefits such as free accommodation and flights to and from the teacher’s home country.

History of the English Language Teaching Major:
Today, English is the most widely studied foreign language in the world. Five hundred years ago, Latin was the most widely studied language because it was the language of business, trade, and education in the Western world. However, during the 16th century, French, Italian, and English gained importance as a result of political changes in Europe, and Latin gradually declined as a language of spoken and written communication.
Latin eventually became a dead language. Reading books in Latin became a classical language exercise. Children began attending “grammar schools” during the 16th through 18th centuries to learn Latin grammar. Learning Latin was considered a form of “mental gymnastics.” In the 18th century, when modern languages began to enter the curricula of European countries, they were taught using the same methods previously used for Latin. Grammar rules were memorized, written exercises were completed, and passages were translated from the second language into the first language and vice versa.
By the 19th century, this approach had become a standard method of language teaching. Textbooks were divided into chapters, with each chapter focusing on a specific grammar rule followed by numerous written exercises.
Importance of Studying English Language Teaching:
What are the benefits of teaching and learning through an additional language? Teaching and learning through an additional language promotes intercultural understanding, improves students’ cognitive abilities, and prepares them for life beyond school. Listening, speaking, reading, and writing are the four fundamental language skills. In linguistics, all four skills are considered equally important. A student can be considered an effective communicator with strong interpersonal skills only when these four abilities work together smoothly.
Unfortunately, in many Indian classroom settings, greater emphasis is placed on writing. Reading is also an extremely important language skill, yet it is often neglected. Students rarely focus on reading. If students can read and understand a text, half of the learning process has already been achieved.
Many students do not speak the language taught at school, which in most Indian contexts is English, because they are afraid. They fear making mistakes, being ridiculed, or facing criticism. However, teachers should remember that if students do not speak, they cannot develop their speaking skills. Likewise, if students do not listen and speak, they will miss important learning opportunities.
Listening, however, is one of the most difficult language skills to master, particularly in foreign languages such as English or French. This is why ASL (Assessment of Speaking and Listening) has become increasingly important in language teaching and learning. Our language laboratory provides students with extensive opportunities to develop and refine their language skills.
Students are advised to contact the admissions department of their preferred university directly through the Hallak EDU team to ensure that all required documents are provided and to receive university-specific guidance.
