Aerospace Engineering
The dream of flight has fascinated humanity since ancient times. You may know that one of the earliest attempts to fly was made by the Arab scholar Abbas Ibn Firnas during the height of Andalusia. The famous Italian artist Leonardo da Vinci also developed his vision of flight by drawing aircraft designs.
Although the idea of balloons and airborne lights had existed in China for a long time, in the late eighteenth century, the Montgolfier brothers invented the first hot-air balloon, a large balloon filled with warm air. The aircraft was equipped with an attached passenger capsule and successfully traveled long distances.
Then, in 1783, Henri Giffard traveled 15 miles aboard a steam-powered airship that could be controlled in terms of direction and movement. The Englishman Sir George Cayley later designed the first controlled glider.
As research in aerodynamics developed, glider inventions continued and steam-powered equipment began to emerge. In 1903, a major turning point occurred in this field. The American Wright brothers invented the first single-engine aircraft that took off, flew, and landed safely using self-propulsion, and they later continued to develop this model.
With aircraft being used for military purposes during the two World Wars, the industry grew rapidly, transitioning to metal construction, jet engines, and streamlined designs reminiscent of today’s aircraft. After World War II, aircraft continued to evolve until they became suitable for civilian air transportation of people and goods to
airports and destinations around the world.
Today, the role of pilots has decreased due to advances in aircraft control technology. Aircraft have become larger, safer, and more widespread, reaching tremendous speeds that exceed the speed of sound and becoming capable of carrying massive payloads exceeding 600 tons.
Aerospace Engineering
This complex and evolving field requires more specialists around the world. For this reason, many universities offer aerospace engineering degree programs divided into two areas:
The first is aeronautical engineering, which includes the design, construction, development, and maintenance of aircraft, as well as the use and production of the latest aviation technologies.
The second focuses on the study of spacecraft technology and the production and development of all types of spacecraft, such as rockets, spacecraft, trajectories, satellites, and space stations.
Skills Required to Study Aerospace Engineering
-Strong academic skills in mathematics, physics, and mechanics.
-Possessing important personal skills such as analytical abilities, problem-solving skills, and precision.
-The ability to work under pressure and in difficult conditions while cooperating with a team.
-Knowledge of design techniques, engineering principles, and technology.
-By studying aerospace engineering, you will develop all of your existing skills.
In addition, you will gain new skills and knowledge through a broader understanding of everything related to aerodynamics, software, propulsion systems, and vehicles.
Where Do Aerospace Engineers Work?
-The career opportunities for aerospace engineers are very broad. You can work for aircraft manufacturing companies, government institutions, airports, airlines, and universities.
-If you decide to work in the aerospace field, you can work for specialized space agencies and research institutes.
-In general, an aerospace engineer can work with anything related to systems, controls, and programming.
